The army's left the trenches
the judges quit their benches
the tanks come rolling down the hill
and all the springtime air is still
no leaf is moving on the trees
the only words you hear are these
now the war is over
we can start the dance
a peace is taking over
that we cannot understand
now the war is over
feels so sweet and sober
now the war is over
the soldiers go home singing
the churchbells gayly ringing
the farmers' daughters smile
the undertaker's closed the file
the field afire with wild flowers
the town crier calls the hour
refr.
all the mystery remains
what is gone is just the pain
that's turned into a sense of wonder
and joy always growing yonder
in the bright eyes of the mother
and you know there is no other
refr.
I've gone back on every deal
I once made with the unreal
I've reneged on every promise
and resigned from the sad office
in the priesthood of pretence
and things do start to make sence
refr.
1993.
